Here's a thread that EH used to do but this time, rather than just one person posting their favourite pieces of free software, why don't the rest of us.
I'll start with the most obvious - AVG.
AVG is a great anti virus.....wait, an anti virus that's free Surely not? Oh yes, and a very good one at that. The latest version (7), is not free but version 6 is and very capable at that.
Please post your own freebie favourites

Nice one Mike For some reason I've just checked and I aint got Ad-aware installed
Off to install that and Spyware Blaster.
Here's another freebie:
Sygate Personal Firewall is a free firewall for home use that prevents people getting into your computer and causing havoc. It also minimises the risk of a trojan or worm (nasty little bleeders which are often a pain to get shot of) infecting your computer.
In my opinion, the best firewall I've tried and it gets top results from www.grc.com

Boy your in for a shock Stu if you have no spyware remover installed, remember Spyware Blaster only stops them being installed, you will need AdAware to get rid of those already there.

Ad aware only found 10 items and I dunno how many Spyware Blaster found but I just told it not to let them in again (whatever buttons you press for that ;D) and closed the prog (as was told in a nice little box when I loaded up the prog)
What else do we have.......ahh yes, HideOE. If you use Outlook Express, then you may find it a pain having space on your taskbar constantly taken up by the program. Not a problem because HideOE banishes Outlook Express to a single icon in the system tray. There's also a version for Outlook last time I checked

Spyware Blaster doesn't find any it just sits in the background blocking them as long as you select all and then protect against all items and then all you need to do is close it, I also check for updates every couple of days as it has so many of new ones added in fact it is worth checking when you download it as there is a good chance there will be some, there are 878 at the moment if you are fully up to date.

I prefer the google toolbar these days which seems to be, to me, the most effective pop up stopper at the moment as well as having easy accesss to google toolbar.google.com/

The one FREE program I found indispensibe and I have used it for years is "My Power Desk" "Ontrack" sold it to V-Com and they, it appeared, dispensed with the free version. So I had to buy the pro version and it is still a great time saver. There are a number of apps in the prog but the main part is a file manage. "The power to organize and manage all the files on your PC! Provides a simple, fast and fun way to organize and manage files, digital photos, MP3 music files and web images on your PC. It's convenient and it saves time! In just one, two or three clicks, you can customize your PC: move, copy, zip, label, color code, search, view, prioritize, convert, and use your files the way you want to use them." Yep its a boring File manager which does all the things that you want windows to do, all the things windows should do, but doesn't . Want to Zip all your Docs into a single zipped archive on your second Hard drive, Select them, right click, On PD menu select Zip to... browse location, (type in file name if you want different from default) and click ok. Done The good news is you can still get the free edition from www.v-com.com/product/pd_free_trial.htmlI give it 11 out of 10

Catfish www.equi4.com/pub/cf/catfish.zip is an invaluable tool for cataloging the contents of any media you may have and then a pretty fast search engine to find on which disk you put that particular file you have need of....
